The CO2 E – Race is a race for climate awareness.

The CO2 E-Race is a race using CO2 friendly vehicles. The intent is to raise awareness in relation to the climate crisis and ways to solve it through technology. Transportation is one of the largest greenhouse gas (GHG) emission sources globally. In addition, air pollution from cars is a major environmental problem in European cities, including Riga. This causes detrimental effects on human health and our physical environment.

CO2 E-Race will communicate to consumers, politicians and corporations alike, addressing some of the common myths of CO2 friendly cars. The CO2 E-Race will also highlight the natural progression and logic in choosing CO2 neutral means of transportation. In this way, the consumer becomes part of the solution, reducing the emission of CO2 into the atmosphere.

In Denmark the race took place in August 2009. The Riga Race will take place on May 15th  2010 with a pre-event in November 2009, when two electric cars will be demonstrated and a CO2 Art Map of Riga will be created The author of this project is Jacob Fuglsang Mikkelsen, who will also create the CO2 map of Riga in 14 November. This event will be available live at viewing point around the city. The GPS tracking system will make it possible to follow the position of each car and web cameras will let the viewers get an impression from inside each car.

In the spring of 2010 there will be an electrical car race in Bikernieku racing track and an e-car parade on the bridges of Riga. This will be a grate possibility to see an e-car demonstration down town Riga. The race will NOT be a race on “who comes first”, “who’s the fastest”, but each car will have to perform different tasks, for example, master the most economical driving, get the best results in acceleration test and car slalom, regularity as well as “best outfit”. After that, the jury will judge the overall performance according to the Notion of Race.

Additional events: seminar about green vehicles; Children’s green car workshop, and exhibition EXHALE by Troel Sandegård.

The CO2 E-Race Riga is organised by the Danish Cultural Institute in Latvia, in cooperation with the Nordic council of ministers` Office of Latvia, the Royal Danish Embassy in Riga and the Soros Foundation–Latvia.
